Ask if anything is Proprietary

If your website is anything but the simplest brochure style site, chances are it uses some type of software that runs on your hosting providers server. Ask what software packages come with your system and if they are proprietary or not. Ask about licensing – what kind of licensing requirements does your system need? If your system has proprietary parts, chances are you can’t take your whole website with you if you decide to leave your current provider. You may be able to take your data, but data needs software to be of use, and if the software is proprietary, my advice is don’t get involved – you could be held hostage by your own provider because you may not be able to migrate your system to another provider.
